Wabi Sabi, born from the whimsical chaos of the Y2K era, is a band that defies convention and embraces the beauty of imperfection. It all began with Damian Cartier “And His My Newt Orchestra,” a quirky ensemble with just a piano, a trombone, and drums. This unique setup became a magnet for other musicians, drawn by the allure of being part of what seemed like a pop success story in the making.
As the band expanded to a vibrant 11-piece act with added horns, bass, guitars, percussion, and vocalists, one challenge persisted, no one could get their name right. From “Damon Carter and The New Orchestra” to “Damien Carter and His Minute Orchestra,” mispronunciations and misspellings were the norm. Ironically, the only place that got it right was an unexpected venue, a biker bar in Panama City.
The turning point came when Damian stumbled upon an episode of “King of The Hill” where the concept of Wabi Sabi, the appreciation of flawed beauty, was introduced. This philosophy resonated deeply with the band’s ethos.
Wabi Sabi perfectly encapsulated their essence as a group that never played a song the same way twice, always willing to follow the music wherever it led on any given night. Wabi Sabi wasn’t just a new name, it was a new identity that celebrated the perfectly imperfect nature of their musical journey.
