The meaning behind the name of the single is particularly significant; in every Latin American country there are “street kids who are either orphans or living in the streets due to economic conditions/social conditions at home - they band together in solidarity to support one another…as young as three, as old as twelve, thirteen, fourteen”. The use of the word “Piraña” acts as a visual representation of the simultaneous harshness and beauty of the street kids. They will “attack in a group and pick an animal clean in the river”, whilst at the same time they are an essential part of the eco-system. The single addresses how the neo-liberal social/economic conditions of these areas produce circumstances where the streets kids must become like “Pirañas” to survive.
