ABOUT THE ARTIST

Before Dawn is the electrifying synth-rock brainchild of Rob and Kate Houle from Appleton, Wisconsin. With roots stretching from the sunny shores of Florida to the bustling streets of Austin, and a brief nomadic stint in Los Angeles, Before Dawn has cultivated a sound that’s as eclectic as their journey. Theater majors who first crossed paths at a college party, Rob and Kate’s shared passions for music, theater, and adventure have been the bedrock of their creative partnership.

During the indie-sleaze era’s peak in Austin, Rob and Kate launched Before Dawn, aiming to deliver a stadium-rock experience in the intimate setting of a duo performance. Their music offers a cathartic escape meant to ignite dance floors. Shawn Petsche, a promoter at Sled Island Music Festival, describes them as a "hook and synth-laden wall of sound" capable of sparking a dance party at a moment’s notice.

Spanning nearly two decades, Before Dawn’s discography includes two full-length albums, two EPs, and several singles, showcasing their evolution and enduring appeal in the indie music landscape. Today, with the addition of drummer Nathan Klein, their live performances are more vibrant than ever.

FEATURED RELEASE

Packets of Gold by Before Dawn is set to electrify the music scene on May 17th, available on all major streaming platforms. This synth-rock single, clocking in at around three and a half minutes and a dynamic 128 bpm, kicks off with a fourteen-second intro that immediately sets the tone.

Packets of Gold is a synth-punk song that comes from a real place, written at a time when I was working in an instant oatmeal packaging plant in the Midwest. It is sung from the point of view of a factory worker experiencing a paradigm shift.
— Rob Houle

The track features a robust blend of electric guitar and atmospheric synth, supported by a foundational bassline and rhythmic percussion that lays a solid foundation for the vocals. Rob Houle’s expressive vocal delivery perfectly matches the driving force of the instrumentation, creating an immersive listening experience. The chorus is enriched with harmonized backing vocals that enhance without overshadowing the song’s poignant lyrics.

Workers spend all night working on the noisy factory floor, performing repetitive tasks, with an abysmal work culture that has more regard for the well-being of the machinery in the plant than the humanity of their workers. Seeing the higher-ups in the organization who have no respect for their employees getting richer and richer has finally given way to the decision to quit.
— Rob Houle

A notable breakdown emerges about three-quarters into the track, echoing the reflective sentiment, “Garbage in garbage out, all we ever talk about,” adding a layer of depth and inviting listeners to consider its meaning. As Packets of Gold reaches its conclusion, its hypnotic allure is undeniable, leaving listeners humming the catchy hook and eager to press play again.

Packets of Gold is about the realization that life is short and there is more to it than work for work’s sake. It’s about the budding awareness that the late-stage capitalism corporate model barely pays a living wage for some and no amount of corporate swag or awkward office parties will make up for that.
— Rob Houle
