ABOUT THE BAND

The Missing Frets began in 2013 with the combination of songwriter and guitarist Shaun Lovell teaming up with bassist Bindu Lovell who would later be joined by drummer Johnny Martin in 2016 after the original duo moved from South Africa to Philly.

Stylistically categorised as ‘Alternative Rock’, the band combine Indie-Blues rock, African Rockability and Alternative Rock to create a unique sound that is both original and satiating to the alt-rock community.

Their debut studio album ‘Pipe Dreams’ proceeds the 2018 release ‘Bodhi Tree’ and their 2020 single ‘Cartel Sage’ which is the first track on their new five track record.

The 2018 release, ’Bodhi Tree’, was a self-produced work that is comprised mostly of live takes in the band’s living room and reached number eighty on the National College Radio charts landing their rotation on over one-hundred college stations across the states between 2018-2019. Their newest studio album was recorded and co-produced by Cardinal Recordings with the aim of building upon the momentum generated from their 2018/19 success. 

Continuing to “breakaway from the cookie cutter traditional genre categorisation”, The Missing Frets utilise their South African roots combining thought provoking lyrical topics, powerful guitar riffs and “chugging rhythms”. 

The lead track on the album ‘Cartel Sage’ utilises an acoustically led melody that progresses to a full band composition that is driven by steady percussion with electric guitar riffs layering throughout that, when coupled with the foundational baseline, create a unique alt-rock sound. 

The use of harmony lines add another excellent dimension to the quality of this track and the emotive vocal color. The lyrical meaning behind ‘Cartel Sage’ tells the story of a person who was born into a life of disadvantaged circumstance that inevitably provokes a battle to overcome these limitations through the help of a guru who mysteriously comes in the form of a cartel gang buster in Mexico.

The epic sound created by the band coupled with the skilful storytelling centred songwriting make for an album that will absolutely please alt-rock fans who are looking for something stylistically less predictable than other tracks of this genre in circulation at the moment. With each track emanating its own unique creative style, this album is definitely worth listening to!
