ABOUT THE ARTIST
The Crux, also known as Rehan, is an up and coming artist whose debut EP is set to drop this coming February. Having always had a natural affinity for music, The Crux had his first taste of the music industry back in 2007 when he became the guitarist of the Hip-Hop band Kobra Kai who went on to win Triple J's Unearthed music competition on an Australian youth radio station.
After his time with the band came to an end, The Crux honed his skill as a producer of “funk driven electronic grooves”; leading him to form his second live duo: Hutch & Rehan. His latest project, The Crux, brings together “live instrumentation, sampling and electronic production into dirty grooves that twist organic guitar and horns around gnarly synths and pounding drum beats”.
Although he receives creative inspiration from a number of styles such as Hip-Hop, Breaks, Funk, Electro, Glitch Hop and Jazz, The Crux combines a variety of compositional elements to form his unique sound. With a growing number of followers and listeners, there is no denying the fact that The Crux is developing a dedicated following of loyal fans.
FEATURED RELEASE
Our featured EP, ‘Shakedown’ by The Crux, is to be released on the 5th of February and will be available to stream on all major streaming platforms! The EP consists of four tracks:
‘Licious Mutha Sucka’, ‘Outta Sight’, ‘Midnight City Detective’, and ‘Dirty Disco’.
The opening track on the EP, ‘Licious Mutha Sucka’, lasts three minutes and seven seconds and sits at 110bpm. The song commences with a sixteen second introduction that features a plethora of creatively panned instrumental layers that set the tone for the main beat. A drum fill instigates the first main movement of the single; combining effected percussion with a funk-styled electric guitar progression, well mixed synth, a foundational bass-line and melodic brass.
A partial break down section from 1:45 to 2:09 features a prominent bass riff that delivers just the right amount of dynamic diversity to ensure that this track is engaging from start to finish. By the time ‘Licious Mutha Sucka’ draws to a close, you’ll find yourself humming along with the catchy melody and in need of hitting that repeat button for another listen.
Although the EP is technically grouped under one genre classification, each track delivers a diverse range of compositional elements that showcase The Crux’s songwriting talent; from the upbeat and rhythmic instrumental flow that features an impressive brass solo and ambient synth in ‘Outta Sight’, the almost ominous vibe of the swirling synth that combines with the bass to provide the perfect platform for the brass hook of ‘Midnight City Detective’, to the creative amalgamation of effected vocalisations, vinyl scratches, a dominant bass-line and ethereal synth progression in ‘Dirty Disco’.
From the well balanced production, to the creative compositional arrangements, fans of The Crux, as well as those who appreciate new and creative music, will definitely want to hear this EP. Make sure you follow The Crux on social media to keep up to date with upcoming releases and performances!
