Sonomaris - ‘Initium’
Sonomaris is a “synergy of minds working together to create art that is bigger than the sum of its parts”. Influenced by hard progressive rock, Sonomaris have developed their own unique sound that although categorised as hard rock, is undeniably their own take on the style.
Following the release of their self-titled EP, Sonomaris release a six track record on the twenty-first of February entitled Initium: ‘Skeletons’ // ‘Prepper’ // ‘The Fallen’ // ‘Million’ // ‘Aequor’ // ‘Undone’.
The band is comprised of four members: Jerry Gonzalez (vocals), Tyrone Thompson (guitar), Rick Trigueros (drums), Rick Zaccaro (bass). Sonomaris have chosen to explore some serious subject matter for this record; addressing topics that include “codependency, mass hysteria, being different and reemergence”.
We had the privilege of previewing track number four on this record: ‘Million’. Commencing with a guitar based introduction, the clean bass and drums instigate at around 0:17 and drive the steady rhythm of this track. The vocal colour of lead singer Jerry Gonzalez is emotive yet dynamically controlled as the track builds to the first chorus at around the 0:57 mark.
The chorus utilises multiple vocal harmony lines coupled with a heavier stylistic shift from the cleaner verse, creating an auditory experience that holds the listener’s attention. The instrumentation becomes more intense in-line with the heavier gravel in Jerry’s voice as the chorus continues to develop, with electric guitar lines being used to add to the fullness of the sound.
The bridge comes in at around the 2:46 mark and strips the track back to a guitar/vocal section that is followed by the addition of steady bass/drums at around 2:59. The track ends with a crescendo of instrumentation and layered vocals that create a full, unique and powerful sound that fans of Sonomaris will undoubtably love.
If this pre-release track is anything to go by, this six track record will assuredly be loved by hard rock fans as well as those faithful to Sonomaris from their previous self-titled release.
