Q&A

WokeChimp had the chance to speak to Sebastian Morawietz about his upcoming EP and get an inside look into his creative process:

What style is your upcoming release?

After my electronic EP, ‘Music For Components,’ I am returning with a classical (piano/cello) EP, called ‘The Shy Dancer’; one of my most personal and expressive releases to date.

Who was behind the EP’s artwork?

Federica Jeanne de Luca. We both know each other from various social sites and admire each other’s works. It is the first time I had a chance to collaborate with her. Federica is a wonderful, expressive artist from Italy.

Did you have any notable collaborations on this track?

On this project, I collaborated with the amazing cellist Isabelle Klemt (credits: Dustin O’Halloran, Agnes Obel). Her expressive playing created a perfect counterpart to my piano performance.

What have you taken away from the compositional process of this single?

Looking back on it, it tremendously helped me stay focused, express my emotions - and keep myself sane - during those crazy Covid-19 times. Here, Mme Bechstein (*1907), my beloved piano, was the perfect therapist.

What was ‘The Shy Dancer’ influenced by?

Musically, ‘The Shy Dancer’, was influenced by the lyrical language of the romantic composers. For me, it is a perfect method of having an intimate conversation with your instrument while staying in the abstract and unlimited expressiveness found in the world of music.

What was your creative influence for the EP?

All three compositions are dealing with the subject of Shyness and the Breaking Out of it, symbolised by The Dance. It is written in a classical A-B-A form which functions here as an emotional arch.

Why did you choose the A-B-A form?

Personal life can be a complex matter and I wanted to reflect it by choosing those two contrasting themes (A, B). ‘A’, which symbolizes the real world, his natural fragile, shy character, and ‘B’, which symbolizes his hopes, wishes, and struggles.

Do each of the compositions have a unique subject?

Each composition focuses on a different subject (Love, Strangeness, and Passion). Although each can be enjoyed on their own, I hope that listeners also find the time to experience this EP as a whole. I believe Aristotle’s saying: ‘The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts’, applies here as well.

What are your thoughts looking back on the experience of writing this EP?

Writing this EP was a very visual and absorbing experience, an intimate journey of becoming The Shy Dancer, visualizing him on a white open stage, expressing myself, dealing with the subject of Love, Strangeness, or Passion.

Fans of Sebastian Morawietz, as well as those who appreciate new and creative music, will definitely want to hear this EP. Make sure you follow Sebastian Morawietz on his social media to keep up to date with his upcoming releases and performances!
