ABOUT THE BAND

Comprised of four members, Hector (keyboard, guitar), Parry Ace (vocals), Nick (drums) and CloudMaster Price (Rapper), Phantom Phunk debuted in 2016 and come out of the Tampa studio Harmonic Factory. Open to expanding the limitations of a singular genre selection and embracing stylistic variation, the band feature guest vocalists and producers to expand the creative input resulting in a diverse discography. 

This open approach to songwriting and composition has allowed the band to freely move between genres that have ranged from psychedelic rock to cloud rap. Their intentional “blend of alt-rock and hip-hop” has resulted in the band being compared to the likes of the Gorillaz and Outkast.

Phantom Phunk’s latest single ‘Tongue Tied’ does not fail to live up to their ambitiously artistic musicality. The track was written from the perspective of an individual who has a longing to be connected with someone who, as a result of circumstantial events, can no longer be with that person.

The struggle of trying to fight against the inevitable void that will forever separate you from the other is incapsulated within this single with the realisation that a future life with this person isn’t possible. Lyrics like “everything could have been right” reflect the bittersweet realisation that life choices have forever separated the intertwining of their two paths. 

The vocal color used in this track perfectly encapsulates the apathetic indifference that is being expressed throughout the song with the realisation that “everything could have been different” showing the sadness of this revelation alongside the full acknowledgment of the outcome of separation.

The stylistic sound of this track embraces hard pans with subtle effects such as a sub-layer of vocoder under the vocal line, coupled with pulsating synths that create a dream-like state when you listen with a pair of good headphones. The rap break at around the 1:25 mark is definitely a standout feature in the track that sets it apart from other artistic and futuristic synth music being produced today. Fans of the Gorillaz, Outkast and MGMT will absolutely love this single.
