Myles Alexander - ‘Anxiety (feat. Brave Sound)’
Born in Hackney, East London, Myles Alexander began his career in theatre performing as a dancer and actor with Arcola theatre. Whilst also pursuing the world of performing arts, Myles used his free time to engage with his own poetry. Looking back, this decision to indulge his creative writing would lead him to music.
After some time away from the music industry, Myles has returned with his new single ‘Anxiety’ featuring Brave Sound. Influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, lalah Hathaway, Erykah badu, Jill Scott and Ella Fitzgerald, Myles revels in the songwriting style of the storyteller and embraces that stylistic approach in his new single.
Myles main message with his music is to keep it “honest and organic”. ‘Anxiety (feat. Brave Sound)’ stays true to this premise with the track written and based upon a conversation that Myles had with a family member about the social stress they are under to appease the stereotypical stigma associated with growing up within a Caribbean community. It is clear that the opening line: ‘Dark clouds cloud my mind’ is a reference to the mental struggle that he has internalised and resultantly expressed in this dark and emotive single.
His vocal performance perfectly projects his battle with anxiety from societal expectation with a gentle vocal color expressing this emotive battle. The melodic flow of this single incorporates a powerful sub bass with a ominous electric piano holding the main riff. The percussion begins slow and spaciously spread out before building to incorporate a more elaborate beat as the verse progresses. An intentional breakdown during the initial ‘Anxiety’ lyrical hook creates a heightened sense of dark emotion that compliments the track. If this first comeback single is anything to go by, Myles is an up and coming artist that R&B fans should be excited about.
