ABOUT THE ARTIST
DRAGG, also known as Lawrence Sean Sibanda, is a Johannesburg born artist who’s parents were originally from Zimbabwe. Although his parents eventually migrated to England, DRAGG decided to return to Zimbabwe and “came to realise that Bulawayo and Johannesburg were culturally, linguistically and musically very interwoven”. At the age of twelve, DRAGG was diagnosed with a severe case of meningitis; resulting in the deterioration of his eyesight and hearing. Refusing to allow this hinderance to prevent accomplishment, DRAGG honed his rhyming talent and has shared the stage with the likes of The Game, JLS, Wretch 32, Tim Westwood, DJ Ace and DJ Edu.
To date, DRAGG has eight Single/EP releases in his online discography; ‘Holla At You’ (2013), ‘Let The Beat Breathe’ (2015), ‘Show Stopper’ (2015), ‘Bandz In The Bag’ (2016), ‘Too Nice’ (2017), ‘Prayed Up’ (2020), ‘Letter To My Love’ (2020), and ‘Foreign’ (2020). One of his most successful tracks, ‘Let The Beat Breathe’, has amassed almost one-hundred and twenty-six thousand streams on Spotify alone. With numbers like that, it’s fair to say that DRAGG has thoroughly established himself within the music industry.
“I’ve been listening to a lot of really good music this year, but of all the records in this genre, Dragg’s latest is definitely in a class of its own.”
The first single on the EP, ‘Prayed Up’, lasts around three minutes and thirty-two seconds and sits at a steady 88bpm. The track commences with a ten second instrumental introduction that combines ambient synth layers with a subtle beat; creating an atmospheric sound that sets the melodic tone for the proceeding vocal. DRAGG’s vocal color is smooth and emotive. Addressing deep and meaningful subject matter, DRAGG doesn’t shy away from bringing his thoughts and passions into his music. The chorus implements effected vocals to form a memorable melodic hook.
The second single, ‘Letter To My Love’, lasts four minutes and two seconds and sits in at around 145bpm. The amalgamation of an ambient piano, a foundational bass, and rhythmic beat, create a unique sound that expresses DRAGG’s authentic compositional talent. The powerful featured vocal line from FRYA provides just the right amount of dynamic diversity that compliments DRAGG’s stylistic rap.
“With this song, you can literally hear his heart when he raps, to the point where I’m convinced he could spit you a recipe for how to make chocolate chip cookies and it would come out sounding like straight gold.”
The last single on the EP, ‘Foreign’, lasts three minutes and seventeen seconds and sits at a smooth 90bpm. The track combines an ominous, individual note piano riff with a sub-bass, steady beat, and systematic effects. DRAGG’s vocal color dynamically shifts with the melodic flow of the instrumental accompaniment. The implementation of layered vocal elements add a creative flare to the production that makes the hook stand out from the verses all the more memorably.
“I don’t often say this about just any EP, but “L.i.T” … feels almost operatic in its storytelling-centric aesthetic, and I think that it’s outside of the box-style construction is definitely what makes it the perfect EP to kick off the new season.”
From the well produced instrumental mixes and meaningful lyricism, to the authentic and powerful vocal performance, fans of DRAGG, as well as those who appreciate new and creative music, will definitely want to hear this EP.
