“[A Better Place] features a theme of doing good for the world…. The album has a fresh take on jazz with both a classic jazz feel and modern approaches.”
The opening track, ‘Make the World a Better Place’, sits at a smooth 122bpm and commences with a fourteen second instrumental introduction that combines a foundational walking bass line, light percussion and a prominent jazz piano. The vocal color is clean and emotive; seamlessly synchronising with the melodic tone of the instrumental accompaniment. A variety of stylistic elements, like the backing vocals found from 1:07 - 1:14, provide the track with just the right amount of dynamic diversity.
Although the album is undeniably categorised as Jazz, each track provides unique compositional components that showcase David Longoria’s musical talent; from the incredible Trumpet introduction in ‘Don’t Let Another Mother Cry’, the ominous, harmonised vocal layering in ‘Terra Pax’, stylistic keys and passionate vocals in ‘I Can’t Get Started’, to the fast flowing lyricism and upbeat rhythmic flow of ‘Look To the Sun’.
